In this 60 minute consultation, we will review your pregnancy and health history, address any questions you may have as you prepare to breast/chestfeed, whether you’re a first time parent or a seasoned pro who has faced challenges in the past. If you’re looking to induce lactation, we can review the protocol and how to get started on the process. This is a great opportunity to receive personalized help prior to delivery. Partners or other household members who may be supporting you postpartum are encouraged to attend!

Topics that may be covered, depending on your particular needs:

• General physiology of lactation
• The golden hour - how to get off to a good start
• Typical newborn behavior
• Feeding duration/frequency
• Antenatal milk expression
• Review of equipment you may need - breast pumps, bottles, pillows, etc.
• Addressing past lactation challenges, particular health or lifestyle concerns that may affect breastfeeding
• Inducing lactation

A typical postpartum consultation will take approximately 90 minutes, as we dive into parent and baby’s health history, troubleshoot and evaluate feeding, review breast/chestfeeding education that is relevant to you, and work together to develop a care plan. Follow up by email, phone, or text is included for two weeks after our visit. Should new problems arise or it has been beyond two weeks since the initial visit, a follow up consultation may be recommended.

An initial visit will include:

• A thorough review of parent and baby’s health history - including your pregnancy and birth story, general health history, and past and present lactation experience
• Addressing current concerns and challenges
• Assessment of milk transfer at breast (or bottle)
• Pre/post feeding weight checks (weighed feeding)
• Examination of your breast/chest tissue
• Evaluation of infant oral structure
• Assistance with positioning and latching
• Flange sizing
• Support with pumping, bottle feeding, and/or supplementing
• Supplemental nursing systems (if needed)
• Milk supply management
• Bottle or Breast Refusal
• Support for weaning if needed
• Customized care plan based on your goals

This service is available to existing clients who have already had an initial consultation. In this visit, we will review how things are progressing with the current care plan and pivot as needed to address any emerging concerns. Follow up by email, phone, or text is included for two weeks after our visit. Should new problems arise or it has been beyond two weeks since our last visit, an additional follow up consultation may be recommended.

Each appointment may vary slightly based on the situation, but will generally include:

• Assessment of milk transfer at breast (or bottle)
• Pre/post feeding weight checks (weighed feeding)
• Reevaluation of care plan with additional findings or recommendations

Virtual consultations can be helpful in many situations. This may be the right option if you:

• Have general questions regarding how feeding is going
• Need a quick check in after your initial in-person visi
• Are interested in inducing lactation
• Need guidance on returning to work or school
• Need help with pumping or weaning
• Have an older infant who is starting solids or encountering a nursing strike
• Experiencing lactation after infant loss

Some feeding challenges cannot be fully assessed virtually; as we uncover underlying issues, an in-person assessment may be recommended.
